Just tried this today; you do not need to kill Sharpclaw. I simply killed a vine cat that was lurking around him and obtained the entry.
I got this codex off a regular mob.

I just received this codex entry on my Jedi Guardian while I was doing the Alderaan Star Fortress.
So I guess it is available to Republic players now too.
The vine cats by the spaceport do not appear to give this codex.
How do I defeat the Primal Vine Cat that’s in the expanse version. this after crashing in Acina’s ship, in the jungle. Vine Cat is 147K and will not go down by myself. No companion
to heal you.
