He obviously got changed to melee tank later in the game. Before he joins you he runs around with a blaster and when u get him he all of the sudden is dressed in orange and got a sword.
I guess that was done to “streamline” Tropper companions with other classes companions. Silly, if u ask me… Vik as a Vanguard style companion with a blaster rifle would have been a lot more fitting.
