When you say “Gift” do you mean just equiping items to her? Or can you actually talk to her and gift her something?

Are you sure that the Primary Stats are correct as on the ingame Companion Character sheet under the Bonus Damage: Strength & Power are stated
Aim and Endurance are the stats you need in heavy armor for her.

She is not a bounty hunter or a sith warrior. She cannot equip heavy armor which requires sith warrior or bounty hunter.

Player classes dont apply to companions. The armor they can wear is dependant on that particular compaions role. Kaliyo wears heavy armor because she is a ranged tank. However she can not wear armor thats specifically for bounty hunter, or sith warrior as that particular class is a pre-requisite for certain armor pieces
This board needs to post the profession of the companion. The companion information is necessary if you are going to equip items with profession limitations.
Kaliyo cannot wear trooper or jedi knight limited equipment either. She must not be a trooper, jedi knight, sith warrior or bounty hunter.
Kaliyo is not obtained during the quest “What You Do For a Partner.” That is a companion quest you can do when you get enough affection with her. She joins you on the first planet, Hutta.
